| We had a 6:30 wake- up call today. We made our way back to where the bus was parked and our luggage found us. | |||
| The Venetian baggage handlers weren’t very gentle. A couple of the ceramic plates I bought were broken beyond repair. We drove for 2 hours and stopped in Classe to see mosaics in the Church of St. Apollinaris. When the basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe was built 1500 years ago it was on the seashore. The imposing architecture of the basilica, which stands today in the country just outside Ravenna, was originally intended to stand on the Adriatic coast, where it was built but which is now a few kilometers away. In fact it is right next to the Basilica that we find the extensive archaeological area of the ancient city of Classe, home of the Roman fleet. Many of the people from the tour were tired of looking at churches ("churched out") and opted to not go in. Instead the sat at a little café and had coffee and pastries. They missed a treat. From the outside of the church it really looks so ordinary, but it was one of the brightest churches we had been in. It housed many beautiful mosaics. |

After visiting the church, we went to the little cafe, ordered cappucinos and rested for a while outside at tables. We boarded the bus and drove for another 1 ½ hour before stopping at another Autogrill for lunch.
