Siena

Wednesday, May 29th

Wake-up call came at 6 today. Luggage out at 7. Had breakfast and boarded the bus at 7:30. We feelt rushed again today, but we were determined not to be late. By the end of the day we will be in Florence.

Our first stop, after a 2 hour ride, was in the Tuscan medieval hill town of Siena. Enclosed within the stone walls are lots of steep narrow streets, which little cars and scooters fly down.

We hiked up the narrow streets, a good distance, passing by shops with colorful ceramics for sale. At last, we turned a corner and there we saw the beautiful Siena's 12th Century Duomo (Cathedral). It is built of marble and dark green stone, giving it a zebra-striped look. Dave and I some how managed to get separated from our group. We knew everyone would be at the bus at 2:15 so we didn’t worry. We walked to an alluring oval shaped piazza called Piazza del Campo.

Lunch time rolled around so we stopped at a little deli and got pizza (once again). By the time we finished lunch it was nearing 1:00. All the stores had shut down for the afternoon siesta and wouldn’t reopen till 4:00, so there was no shopping in Siena. We strolled down the streets (much easier than going up) and waited in a park area for Umberto to come meet us.
